How To Find The Best Oil Filter For Your Toyota Truck

At Toyota Parts Center, we’ve done a little research to help you find the best oil filter for your Toyota pickup truck.

We’ve torn apart and analyzed five different oil filters for the Tundra and eight different oil filters for the Tacoma. Here is what we found.

Toyota Tacoma Oil Filter Comparison

With the Toyota Tacoma oil filter, here is our Top 3:

Toyota OEM
Wix
K&N

The Toyota OEM, Wix and K&N filters are all great filters for your Tacoma. These three rise to the top when compared to Bosch, ACDelco, MicroGard, Fram High Mileage and SuperTech.

Here’s why we like the Toyota OEM, Wix and K&N filters.

Filter Surface Area – These three filters had the largest filter surface area to help filter out more oil impurities.

Bypass Valve – Of the eight that we compared, these three had the best bypass valves. Each of the valves functioned at a high level.

Filter Materials – The materials used in these three filters was less paper-like, less crumbly when cut, and generally sturdier.

So which did we like the best? They are all good filters. However, the Toyota OEM ($4.33) comes in at a lower price than the Wix ($6.99) and K&N ($13.99) filters.

If you can find a Wix or K&N filter at a similar price to the OEM filter, they are worth considering. However, you’ll get more value out of the Toyota OEM parts.

Toyota Tundra Oil Filter Comparison

When it comes to the Toyota Tundra, we examined five filters. Here is how we would rank them.

Toyota OEM ($4.33)
Wix ($6.99)
Fram Standard ($6.44)
MicroGard ($6.59)
Fram ExtraGuard ($9.49)

Like the Tacoma, the Toyota OEM and Wix filters had more surface area as well as a better bypass valve. The Fram and MicroGard were solid filters, but need not meet the high levels of the Toyota OEM and Wix filters.

The Fram ExtraGuard filter we tested did not fare well. It had inconsistent manufacturing and loose surface particles as well as the smallest surface area and highest density.

How To Select The Perfect Pickup

Selecting the perfect pickup truck can be a difficult decision.

Toyota offers two types of trucks the Tacoma and the Tundra. While there are two models, deciding between the two can be a difficult decision.

To help you decide, here are some questions that you need to ask yourself.

How will you be using your truck?

Will your truck be used for a lot of heavy-duty work? Or will it be used as a family type vehicle? Based on how you use the truck, you’ll have a lot of options. If you’re considering it as a work-only truck, you’ll want to consider the regular-cab option. If you’re thinking it will be used for work and play, consider the double-cab options.

Who will be riding in your truck?

If you’re looking for something with more space you have several options. Both the Tacoma and Tundra come with double-cab options. However, if you have a big family and they’ll be riding in your truck, you may want to go with the Tundra as it has more cab space.

Are you concerned about gas mileage?

If you’re concerned with gas mileage, you’ll want to consider the Tacoma as it gets better gas mileage than the Tundra. The Tacoma gets 21/25 (city/highway) mpg. While the Tundra gets 16/20 mpg.

Whatever truck you decide on, make sure to use genuine Toyota parts. This will keep your truck on the road longer. Just do a search for Tacoma parts or Tundra parts on the internet. You’ll find some quality parts.

2012 Toyota Tacoma is, you guessed it, “Refreshed”

It seems that with every new vehicle unveiled at Toyota, another layer is added to the cumulative feel of the brand. Nearly every vehicle slated for a 2012 sales year has been redesigned to appeal to those looking for a more “fun to ride” vehicle that has a ferocious presence on the road. This trend was continued in the recently announced Toyota Tacoma. While not very many changes happened under the hood this year, several aspects of the vehicle’s exterior and interior were reworked. The result is a vehicle that, according to the press release, “offers a restyled exterior look and a redesigned, upgraded interior in all models for 2012. New changes add comfort, usability and audio/infotainment performance.”

The face of the vehicle has been significantly changed, to reflect the more angular look Toyota has been working on of late. This involved “a redesigned hood, grille, headlamps and front bumper, among other changes.” It’s really no surprise here that it is in fact more aggressive. Based on the recent drive for attitude in Toyota’s aesthetic division when designing vehicles for the 2012 model year, it can safely be assumed that Akio Toyoda (CEO) has a new image for Toyota in mind. Ever since the LFA shook the company at it’s foundation, it seems like more and more consumer models are aimed towards that look and feel. The 2012 Toyota Tacoma still has it’s rounded corners that make the iconic truck what it is, but the lines and contour of the front end is much more defined.

The interior was also significantly reworked, to involve the latest and greatest in comfort. “Access Cab models offer a new available six-speaker system with an AM/FM/ Satellite Radio-capable head unit with a single-disc CD player. Built-in Bluetooth® allows hands-free phone, and a USB port enables connection of an iPod®, MP3 player or flash drive with music files.“ The DoubleCab V6 model includes Toyota’s EnTune multimedia suite, allowing drivers to access their personal entertainment media in a quick distraction-free way.

Toyota has also expanded the optional configurations of the 2012 Toyota Tacoma, to involve different combinations of Toyota Parts and Toyota Accessories. The X-Runner, X|T, and X|T Pro models all are different versions of the same great vehicle, tailored to appeal to different audiences.

2010 Toyota Tundra

The 2009 Chevy Silverado, “America’s Best Truck” is getting a run for their money with the new Toyota Tundra on the market. The new Silverado has select improvements that give it a segment topping fuel economy rating, a 6.2-liter engine, and locks on the rear wheels to reduce wheel spin. It now has a 6-speed automatic transmission, compared to the 4-speed on the last model. The technological changes are included in the interior. These include a New Version of OnStar, XM Traffic Flow, and Blue Tooth connectability.
Yes, that’s a lot of cool features, but most of them come only in the more expensive Crew Cab package. Toyota uses Genuine Toyota Parts to include more advanced features for a lower price than most dealers. And of course, the genuine Toyota parts make all Toyota cars have a higher and better quality. The Toyota tundra has a DVD navigation system, and it provides audible and onscreen instructions. These features are included and don’t require a monthly subscription, unlike the Silverado, which requires an $18.95 monthly payment.
The Silverado has a five star crash rating, but the Tundra is the top safety pick of 2009. It has driver and front passenger seat-mounted airbags. It also includes driver and front passenger knee airbags. These two features are not available on the Silverado. The standard front and rear side curtain airbags included on the Tundra are an extra cost feature on the Silverado.
Again, the Toyota Tundra has knocked out all other trucks in its class as it climbs to the top of the chart. The safety features, the technology differences, and the better gas mileage make this truck a top pick for anyone looking for a heavy duty vehicle powered by heavy duty parts. And of course, genuine Toyota parts outlast all other brands, so your truck can withstand even the toughest conditions.
