Several owners tell very similar stories, the car speeds up to near 100 miles per hour and brakes do nothing to control it. Some owners speculate that engine malfunctions are the problem. This fact however, has not been proven. Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. Inc. is instructing dealers to attach floor mats to seat frames on the driver’s side of select vehicles with self-locking wire ties to prevent the mats from snagging on gas pedals and causing unintended acceleration.
Toyota Motor Sales began sending out instructions about the fix to its regional sales offices on Thursday, Oct. 1. Regional personnel began distributing the information to dealers the next day.
He says the mats are to be secured to the driver’s seat frame with nylon self-locking wire ties, described as plastic straps that loop back into themselves and lock when pulled tight. Dealers also are to attach a label to the wire tie warning dealers and customers to ensure that these Toyota accessories are secured with restraining straps. Toyota vehicles involved are 2007-10 Camrys, 2005-10 Avalons, 2004-09 Priuses, 2005-10 Tacomas and 2007-10 Tundras.

Toyota Motor Corp. said Tuesday it will recall 3.8 million vehicles in the United States, the company’s largest-ever U.S. recall, to address the problem with the removable floor mat that could cause accelerators to get stuck.
Toyota said it was still working with officials with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
to find a remedy to fix the problem. Owners could be notified about the recall as early as next week. Toyota spokesman Irv Miller said until the company finds a fix, owners should take out the removable floor mat on the driver’s side and not replace it, just to stay on the safe side.
The recall will affect 2007-2010 model year Toyota Camry, 2005-2010 Toyota Avalon, 2004-2009 Toyota Prius, 2005-2010 Tacoma, and the 2007-2010 Toyota Tundra.
This will cause a drop in parts and accessories sale. Parts departments will be hurting because of this recall, so they should be preparing now for the tough road ahead.

Toyota announced that it’s testing a mouthpiece-free breathalyzer to keep those with high alcohol levels off the road.
Similar to Volvo’s drunk driving tool, drivers blow into the handheld device, which analyzes their breath without them having to put the product in their mouths.
A mounted digital camera records which face goes with which reading so an inebriated driver can’t try to push a false reading from a volunteer’s less-boozy breath.
If the alcohol level
is too high (no word yet on what “too high” means), the ignition is disabled and wont start until a lower reading is achieved. This will make sure that the roads will be safer to all going driving. There is no word about when these will start to be available.

Toyota has announced its new on-board telematics program called Safety Connect. The system comprises four major security features that include the following:
Automatic Collision Notification (ACN)
The ACN automatically calls the Toyota response center if a head-on collision occurs. The Safety Connect response center gets the ID and location of the vehicle using a GPS system, and the response agent can directly communicate with the driver. If the driver is not able to respond, the agent assumes an emergency and notifies the Public Safety Answering Point nearest to the vehicle – providing necessary help.
Emergency Assistance Button (SOS)
24-hour emergency support is only a press away with the SOS button. If the Automatic Collision Notification fails, any passenger can use this button to notify Toyota’s specialized call center.
Stolen Vehicle Location (SVL)
Using cellular signals and GPS, Safety Connect can track down the location of a stolen vehicle. The Safety Connect subscriber only needs to report the call center regarding the theft of his/her vehicle after making a police report
Roadside Assistance
The Toyota Safety Connect response center is ready to provide assistance 24/7. From towing problems to jump-start issues, you can ask for technical help by pressing the SOS button. The new technology will be available in selective Toyota models by 2010. With Safety Connect, Toyota strengthens the bond with its customers while ensuring enhanced reliability.
The Safety Connect feature is available in most 2010 models. They are available in every truck model and in most cars. The new Silverado has select improvements that give it a segment topping fuel economy rating, a 6.2-liter engine, and locks on the rear wheels to reduce wheel spin. On May 15, Chrysler began to notify 1,200 suppliers its plans to pay for claims that came before the filing for bankruptcy. In court, they disclosed a primary list of affected suppliers. They also included the cost of the claims for each supplier. Contracts with these suppliers are expected to continue with the new company created by the sale of most Chrysler assets.
The list of suppliers is not final and Chrysler will continue to work with suppliers who want to work with the newest company.
Suppliers with the largest payments include Continental AG (Germany) and Johnson Controls (Milwaukee). Both companies are planned to receive about 70 million. Magna International (Canada) is targeted to receive just over 63 million.
The suppliers are going to receive about ½ of what is owed in increments over the next several weeks. The rest of the payment is expected to come after the sale with Flat Group SpA (Italy).
Chrysler said it would negotiate with suppliers who disagree on the amount owed to them. Judge Arthur Gonzales will hear any objections on the June 4th court hearing.
Toyota has been researching new suppliers in the past 12 months in anticipation of the financial problems caused by GM and Chrysler’s financial woes. They have taken necessary precautions and they are believed to be set for future difficulties. I guess we will know when you and I go into your local Toyota Parts department. The counterman will inform us if the part we need is on terminal Backorder or if it is readily available like it always has been.
