Do you own a 1997-1999 Toyota Camry or Toyota Avalon and wonder what that noise is coming from the front suspension?
Kansas City Toyota Dealerships everywhere have been asking themselves the same question for years to try and figure out the problem and its solution. They have changed several different parts on these vehicles to see if it would help, including suspension struts and other notable Toyota parts.
Finally in January of 2000, Toyota came out with a new set of strut mounts that corrected the problem. These mounts have a much thicker rubber bushing that eliminates the thumping and corrects the problem.
Here is a list of the genuine Toyota parts numbers: 48603-33021 and 48609-33011.

i have a 99 avalon with 88k miles and everytime i go over little bumps- i would hear thumping noise don’t know if its the strut or bushing? i know for sure it’s not the shock, just had it replaced.
I have a 98 Camry that had the same thumping noise. Replaced struts, lower control arm bushings and finally replaced the upper strut mounts which stopped the noise. I had asked the parts man about a replacement part that you mentioned and he didn’t know anything about it. Anyway, my wife is real pleased to have the noise gone. We found replacements on the internet for about 33 dollars for each side and it took less than an hour to replace each one. Hope this helps anyone with the same problem.

You posted a reply/response concerning a set of upper strut mounts that you replaced on your 98 Toyota Camry, and that you found them on the internet.
What site did you find them on?? Are,or were they the new and improved ones that Toyota finally produced to correct the front end thumping noises?
I have a 98 Avalon that’s had that front end noise every since I purchased the car back in 99, and it’s driven me crazy trying to find out what was causing it! I recall back then, that Toyota issued a bulletin for this problem, and it covered Avalons and Camrys manufactured in 97-98, but only covered certain vin numbers, unfortunately my vehicle did not fall in the vin coverage range of numbers, so I stopped persuing it, but the noise has gotten so bad that I would like to correct this problem once and for all. So, are you sure that the replacement of these mounts corrected the problem for you??
